Nest: Not your nuts & berries thermostat- Or is it?

I like to hand write and mail thank you cards as opposed to texting the letters “thx” and I (gasp…) still bring my camera to take photo’s of special occasions. It’s quite possible I’m the only person in the world that doesn’t understand the difference between data and WiFi, even after it’s been explained to me 80 or so times. I am completely capable using technology, rarely understand it, and only occasionally appreciate it.
So when I was initially introduced to the smart thermostat called Nest, I was almost annoyed by the thought of consumers too lazy to walk over and turn the heat up or A/C down. In fact, I felt no rush to schedule our company Nest Pro Installer training. But, I finally did and… Wow!
Both Nest (and its competitors, Honeywell’s Lyric and Ecobee) seriously won me over. Yes, they can be controlled by your phone (always within arms reach, right?) without having to get off the couch or out of bed. But I really do believe they can save you money!
It’s sort of freaky, and has to do with algorithms, but these smart thermostats- specifically Nest, learn your temperature preferences. After installation, you mostly just, well, use it and wait for it to learn your home’s heating and cooling patterns. It remembers your input and will eventually start making changes for you. Nest also includes a little green leaf that pops up on the display when you’re entering a temperature range that will most likely save you money. Another cool feature is that you can set a PIN to lock others out from manually changing the temperature outside of a preset range.
Consumers in the US with a Nest thermostat installed saved between 10-12% on their heating bills and approximately 15% on cooling bills. That comes to around $145 a year, so the Nest thermostat can literally pay for itself in about two years. Some key features are:
  • It automatically changes as your life and the seasons change. Use it for a week and it programs itself.
  • It lights up when you walk in the room.  It’s called Farsight and it lights up big and bright on the beautiful display – you can see it from across the room.
  • It knows when you’re away. With Auto-Away, Nest turns itself down to save energy.
  • It helps to keep your home safe. You’ll get an alert on your phone if there’s something wrong, like temperatures are so low your pipes could burst.
